How do you vote for someone who is the best actor? Do you vote for the one who is so scarily psychotic that you wonder if the actor herself has a dark side that no one knows about, or do you vote for the one that makes you forget they are an actor, instead making you feel like you are watching the real person in the flesh, as though the movie were a documentary?
Oscar season is upon us, and I have not a clue.
Does IT even matter anymore? Being the jaded film major that I am, I look to movies where I dont necessarily have to think, where I escape into another realm that makes my present reality subside for at least an hour or two. Movies, to me, are pure escapism, and yes, while they are masterpieces in their own right, I look to them as an escape from the everyday. So if I am looking at my watch or notice the popcorn chomping cow behind me in the theatre, the movie is obviously not holding my interest. But if I dont even notice the edit splices (the corner circles that accompany any film-based movie..ha, now I’ve ruined you!), then I feel like it is a good film, regardless of critics choice.
Escaping is the key to a good movie.

Film Student for Life: The Prestige–A Journey of the Magic of Perception
June 4, 2007 by me
Wow. That is all I could say last night after viewing Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, The Prestige. Wow. It’s one of those movies that stays with you long after viewing, and makes you want to re-watch it, if only it weren’t 2:10 minutes…For those of you who don’t know who Chris Nolan is, he is the genius behind Memento and Batman Begins. Although I haven’t seen Batman Begins (for reasons that bring back very cold memories of lockdown crew), I have to say this is one of my favorite films so far.
It’s all about perception, magic, and the element of psychological surprise. It does help that two of the main actors (Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman) are enjoyable to watch, and the production design is amazing. It was also up for an Oscar, but I think it lost to Dreamgirls. Anyway, if you have a chance, check this film out, it is truely mystical and amazing. It’s so hard to describe, like Memento. Chris Nolan is one of those directors who I hope will be around for a while, and while he’s not as qooky as the guy that did the Royal Tannenbaums (thankfully so), he has that same independent spirit with a big studio budget, which makes for one really entertaining and engrossing movie. You will truly get lost in the storyline. The escapism returns.Category Film Student for Life. | Tags: | No Comments

Contemplations: You ever get that feeling…
June 4, 2007 by me
Does anyone ever get that funny feeling that you feel like you’re in-between something great…like something fantastic will happen to you if you are just patient and let it happen…and then something so strange and out of the blue happens and you are, like, what the hell? I often wonder where the road between here and there lies, and too often then not, I feel like a hitchhiker on a road leading nowhere, looking down unto the vastness of the plains…and just when I think there is no end in sight, a Clooney/McCaughey look-a-like in a red Viper shows up and offers me a ride.
This funny thing called life…when you least expect it, something weird happens that throws you for a loop and reminds you of your existance.Category Contemplations., Random Ramblings. | Tags: | No Comments
