I Hate Sarah Marshall…BRILLIANT!

March 19, 2008 by roseweaver

In the “why didn’t I think of that” category, I bring to you the brilliant marketing campaign that is FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL. Not sure about you, but the city is plastered with these black and white posters of the words “Sarah Marshall Sucks”, and a website to visit. I wouldn’t have noticed these at all, but the first time I saw the billboard, I was sitting in my car in the car wash line for 30 minutes, and, like the human curiousities we all have, wanted to get on the internet and see what this was all about.

So it turns out, it is a new movie coming in April…hilarious premise, starring that guy from How I Met Your Mother (conviently named Marshall) and Kirsten Bell of Veronica Mars fame…but that’s not even the point. The writer (that Marshall guy) has set up a teaser blog as the main character of his movie…and thus another advertising scheme is born…and another of those “why didnt I think of that so I could be rich and famous” ideas is crossed off my life list.

If you’re curious, which by now, human curiousity dictates it so, visit the website http://www.ihatesarahmarshall.com and for the real premise, visit http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800039/

I was researching the billboards and came across your blog…

The only disappointing thing is – Steven Singer, a jeweler in Philadelphia already did this campaign last year “I hate Steven Singer” – same idea. Although, Sarah Marshall has better copywriting and a more complex marketing idea.

I think the bill boards are cool, but a pretty imature thing for an adult to do, plus there are way better ways to spend that money. but other then that its pretty cool to see bill boards around that keep people wondering…..and I agree with JD, that is a pretty unfair statement, even if it is a joke.

I live in Toronto Ontario Canada. The Sarah Marshall posters are on the back of a bunch of city buses. My 10 year old and I were driving home from school one afternoon, and we saw the bilboards and bus ads. She was confused, and upset, “who is sarah and why are people being mean to her by advertising on the backs of buses mommy?” I said i was unsure what it was all about and came to check it out. Not somehting i want my 10 year old doing since there are so many negative things out there about it. she has since forgotten about it until she saw a preview of the movie on tv. so once again i have questions about who is Sarah Marshall. SIGH kids forget nothing! LOL
