  1. Music: It doesn't Suck, but it doesn't Rock either.

    January 30, 2009 by me

I don’t necessarily think Kelly Clarkson’s new single, My Life Would Suck Without You, well, sucks…but I’m not sold on it either. Dare I say, I was expecting more. With a beginning riff reminiscent of her “Walk Away” debut, the sample club beat is mediocre at best. Catchy, yes, but still mediocre. I also have a problem with any song claiming “I’m nothing without you” (including my own songs that have this very same line). For some reason, I’m totally fine with a guy singing that line, but when it’s a girl, it just doesn’t resonate the same…yeah, I know, whatever, I’m a contradiction.

And I am a Kelly Clarkson (the artist) fan (not an American Idol fan–me no likey that show), but still, as her new breakout single, I’m not sold. I’d love her to follow in Pink’s footsteps of “Sober”, which I think is a great pop song of substance, but I think Clarkson’s song is hitting the Billboard’s top 10 because tweens (and pop tarts) are so desperate for anything resembling the sugar pop albums of old that they’ll gravitate towards anything with a good dance beat.

It doesn’t suck, but it doesn’t rock either. It’s not living up to her “Miss Independent” “Behind These Hazel Eyes” and “Walk Away” caliber that we all know she’s capable of. I’m still a fan, but I need more.

But even after typing all this…this catchy song’s now stuck in my head…crap.

  2. TV OD: Trust Me in 5 or less…

    January 30, 2009 by me

    1. For being based at a Chicago ad agency, there sure weren’t many exteriors of Chi-town. Want Chi-town? See The Beast.

    2. The pilot, for me, fell flat, but the premise, even though nothing new, may hold its own with the TNT line-up, especially when expertly placed following The Closer (love this show!).

    3. I love the casting. I have missed Eric McCormick since Will and Grace…Tom Cavanaugh since Ed…and Monica Potter since…hmm…that stupid Freddie Prinze movie? (Head Over Heels, I think it was called, and yes, I kinda did like it….) But I love them all the same, which is why, even though the pilot was lacking pizazz, I’ll still DVR it.

    4. Here’s hoping for more plot twists and Chicago exteriors.

  3. Film Student for Life: The Wrestler in 5 or less

    1. For someone who didn’t know who Mickey Rourke was or did, I thought he was excellent as a washed-up wrestler trying to make amends.

    2. Marisa Tomei, whom I don’t particularly like as an actor, was believable and carried herself well in what could have been a one-dimensional role as a stripper.

    3. As far as plotlines go, I was bored (and I little dizzy from the non-steady cam/docu style of filmmaking).

    4. I don’t know if he deserves the Oscar (cause I am hearing marvelous things about Sean Penn), but Rourke was very very good.

    5. Like most Oscar-worthy films…it’s not very uplifting. If you want uplifting, go see Mall Cop.
