  2. How TV ruins…I mean rules my life or How my dog got named Ollie McGee

    I got a puppy. Not a puppy, but a dog. Finally. Love him. To death. But naming him, well, that took sooo long (ok, only a day, but still). He was “hey you” and “dog” for a long 24 hours.  So why the name Ollie McGee you ask?  Well, since it’s my blog, I’ll tell you.

    It stems from my obsession (and admiration?) for TV.  I was watching The Closer the night I got Ollie, and there was a murder suspect named Oliver on the show…I know, I know, but it stuck with me…so I woke up the next morning and was like, I want to name him Oliver…even though that sounds like a cat. No go, something just wasn’t right. Then I thought, well, I love Dinozo on NCIS, but that has the word “no” in it, and I wouldnt want him thinking his name was “no”. So then I thought, McGee…you know, the geek/author on NCIS. Ok, I like that name…but I couldnt see myself 35 and saying, Here McGee…something about that didnt ring true…So I am at the vets office and they are asking for his name, and I so desparatly want to tell them “dog” but I finally write down “Ollie”. Nickname for Oliver, right? That’s what I thought too…until I realized where Ollie came from…Downstairs in my parents house there is a pencil sketch framed above a bulletin board.  It is a picture of puppets (I guess) from the show Kubla, Fran and Ollie, which (again, I guess) was the “Dora the Explorer” of its time (in other words, very popular).  And I had always seen that photo, but never realized that it had cemented into my brain the word “Ollie” so that I could name my dog after it.  So then I came up with Ollie McGee…which I only use when he is in trouble…which is often…he is my dog, after all!
